GNU Linux The collective product of thousands of independent programmers around the world, developed on the basis of the original kernel written in 1991 by Linus Torvalds of Finland, a student of computer science. Distributed under the GPL (GNU General Public License), Linux is made available not only in binary form but also in the source code.
